Barkdark

Speculative Idea

Material: Paperbark (bark from the Australian paperbark tree)

Functions: Aesthetic darkening of interiors

Application: As adjustable window coverings, e.g., blinds, curtains

One workshop group speculated about possible future uses for the bark of the Australian paperbark tree. They contributed their knowledge as an environmental scientist, apple tree lover, process designer, and project manager.

Paperbark trees are resistant to many climatic changes and could become much more widespread in the future. Their bark is papery and regrows continually in many layers.

The speculation team designed an adjustable window covering made of paperbark, which could be used to darken interiors. Depending on the light situation, the covering increases or decreases the layers of paperbark to optimally darken a room. The organic structures of the bark would cast shadows in the room and contribute to an aesthetic mood.

»With the ›Barkdark‹ prototype, we’re drawing on the idea that paperbark is very translucent and can be layered extremely well. This makes it suitable for use as a window covering, for example as blinds or curtains that can be adjusted. … The idea is also very aesthetically pleasing. We see it as a nice addition to a living space.«
