Connecting Creatures Pavillions

Speculative Idea

Material: Mycelium

Functions: Providing spaces for festive gatherings with friends and family

Application: As pavilion structures in public spaces, e.g., in parks

This speculative idea was crafted by a workshop group of six people. They are (among other things) a product design student, hobby baker, science communicator, landscape architect, and artist.

Their speculation is the »Connecting Creatures Pavilions.« These mycelium-made pavilions would be places where families or groups of friends can gather. In green spaces, such as parks or forests, the pavilions would provide a space to celebrate community. Each time guests stay in the pavilions, they would create a new additional element. This could be a hammock, a bridge, or another pavilion. Over time, many visitors would create a networked structure that connects people (and other living beings).

»The ›Connecting Creatures Pavilions‹ are places where you meet with friends or family to celebrate important moments of your life or simply your friendship. And they can be located in the woods, parks, or tiny forests in the city. (…) The key aspect for us was how to make them: The process is very important, but also the outcome, which is kind of a testament to the time spent together, an embodied experience.«
