Materials: Soft materials (silicone, degradable plastics) & air
Functions: Massaging the body according to its needs
Special feature: Draws information and energy from the wearer’s skin
Application: Mobile machine worn on the body
We present… the »Massage Octopus«, a speculative design from 2050 created in a workshop at the Futurium Lab. A team of workshop participants came up with the »Massage Octopus« and crafted a first prototype.
The »Massage Octopus« is a soft mobile machine that people could wear on their bodies in the future. It gently wraps around the body with its flexible ›suckers‹. Its sensors detect which areas need to be touched or massaged. The octopus’s material is then activated by an air supply and the arms are moved in a massaging wave motion according to the wearer’s needs.
»We have developed a ›Massage Octopus‹ that receives energy from the skin and moves using its suckers, absorbing different tensions in the body. Inside is an electrode connection that transmits information and different sensations. The touch can be rough or soft, so it can produce different massage effects on the body.«
